This
is a nice route on the other side of Besseggen. Visitors park at Vargebakken
and walk straight towards the mountain. There is a slight descent from
Vargbakken to Varga River, which you cross via a nice bridge. Follow the
trail for a little while and then head directly towards Knutshøryggen.
There is also a trail along this route, although it is less obvious among
the terrain as the one that continues towards Torfinnsbu. There is a bit
of climbing until you are up on the ridge itself, and hiking conditions
can be a bit nasty in wet weather or during strong winds. As the trail
continues, there are some stretches where it is clearly visible and others
where you can hardly make it out. However, in clear weather the route
is fairly evident since it is straight down towards Leirungsdalen Valley
to the south and Nedre Leirungen to the northeast. Hikers shall quite
simply remain up on the ridge along this entire route. Before passing
the actual peak, you will encounter a couple of pre-peaks followed by
descents into passes. The last leg on up to the top looks a bit sketchy
as viewed from the pass that comes after the final pre-peak, but the route
to the top is surprisingly manageable without becoming overly steep. Once
at the top, you can see the serpentine stream of people manoeuvring across
Besseggen. >From the top, you can either turn around and return via
the same route or continue in a north-western direction over the ridge
until you come down to Leirungsåi and then head to the left towards
Øvre Leirungen (another alternative is to head to the right and
follow the trail to Gjendeosen if this should be preferable). The trail
down along this area is not well marked, although it is very obvious among
the terrain. This route takes 5 to 6 hours round-trip if you do the loop,
and you "save" 1 to 2 hours by backtracking along the trail
on the return trip.
