The most common route up starts at Bessheim and follows the marked trail up to the outlet for Bessvatn Lake. From here there is a partially marked route up to the top that follows the north shore of Bessvatn Lake for a while before crossing Grotåe and going up the ridge south of the Besshøbreen glacier. The trip takes about 7 hours up and down.
Other alternatives include:
A) Staying up on Bessfjellet mountain from the east end of Bessvatn Lake, and then following the narrow passage west of the Besshøbreen glacier. (Allow at least 7 hours total up and down.)
B) Following the trail from Memurubu towards Besseggen, and then turning off a few hundred metres before Tjern 1,432 masl, and following the southwest ridge more or less directly northeast towards the top. (Allow a bit under 6 hours total up and down.)
C) Starting from Gjendesheim, and following the usual Besseggen Trail to the strip between Bessvatn Lake and Lake Gjende and then heading straight up towards the top. (About 8 to 9 hours total up and down)
